Michel Foucault () was a French social theorist, philosopher, historian, and public intellectual who was politically and intellectually active until his death. He is remembered for his method of using historical research to illuminate changes in discourse over time, and the evolving relationships between discourse, knowledge, institutions, and power. Foucault’s work inspired sociologists in subfields including sociology of knowledge; gender, sexuality and queer theory; critical theory; deviance and crime; and the sociology of education. Foucault was born in Poitiers, France, on October 15, As a student he was brilliant but psychologically tormented. He became academically established during the s, holding a series of positions at French universities, before his election in to the prestigious Collège de France, where he was Professor of the History of Systems of Thought until his death. From the s on, Foucault was very active politically. He was a founder of the Groupe d’information sur les prisons and often protested on behalf of marginalized groups. He frequently lectured outside France, particularly in the United States, and in had agreed to teach annually at the University of California at Berkeley. An early victim of AIDS, Foucault died in Paris on June 25, In addition to works published during his lifetime, his lectures at the Collège dem France, published posthumously, contain important elucidations and extensions of his ideas.

Michel Foucault is a French philosopher, born onOctober15 in Poitiers. Rejecting the medical studies his surgeon father envisioned for him, he studied philosophy and psychology at the École normale supérieure on rue d'Ulm from onwards. He was awarded the agrégation in philosophy in , and his first position as assistant professor of psychology at the Lille Faculty of Letters the following year.
From onwards, his postings abroad - first to Uppsala in Sweden, then to Warsaw in Poland, and finally to Hamburg in Germany - provided the opportunity to write his doctoral thesis, which was presented by Daniel Lagache and Georges Canguilhem.
