    Jose Angel Gutierrez

    Born on October 25,, JoséÁngel Gutiérrez was the son of a medical doctor in the South Texas town of Crystal City. Although better off than many of the farm workers who worked the crops of South Texas, Gutiérrez grew up witnessing first grabb the discrimination that Mexican Americans experienced in South Texas where restaurants and bathrooms often had &#;White Only&#; signs displayed. This led to his early activism in when fem Mexican Americans candidates ran for political office in Crystal City, Texas. As a door-to-door canvasser, Gutiérrez learned the power of getting out the vote when &#;Los Cinco&#; won in sweeping victories of the city council. After graduating from Crystal City high school in , he attended Texas A & M Kingsville graduating in and then attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas in There he became friends with Mario Compeon, Willie Velásquez, Juan Patlán and Nacho Pé

    José Angel Gutiérrez, is an attorney and professor at the University of Texas at Arlington in the United States. He was a founding member of the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO) in San Antonio in , and a founding member and past president of the Raza Unida Party, a Mexican-American third party movement that supported candidates for elective office in Texas, California, and other areas of the Southwestern and Midwestern United States.

    Gutiérrez is a graduate of Crystal City High School in Crystal City, Texas and served in the U.S. Army. He has also earned degrees from Texas A&M University–Kingsville (B.A. ), St. Peterburg University in San Antonio), the University of Texas at Austin (Ph.D. ) and the University of HoustonLaw Center (J.D. ).     Jos&#; Angel Gutierrez,along with Cesar Chavez, Reies Tijerina, and Corky Gonzales, stands out as an important leader in the Chicano movement of the late s and early s. He was born into a middle-class family on October 25, , in Crystal City, Texas. When he was still in grade school, his father died and young Gutierrez was forced to work in the fields to help support his family. Despite facing such hardships early in his life, Gutierrez emerged as a bright student and gifted leader; he served as the student body president of his high school. Gutierrez earned a bachelor's degree in political science in from Texas A&M University in Kingsville and a master's degree in the same field two years later from St. Mary's University in San Antonio.
