Paul LewisCBE (born 20 May 1972) is an English classical pianist.[1]
Early life
[edit]Lewis's father worked at the Liverpool Docks and his mother was a local council worker; there were no musicians in his family background.[1] Lewis began by playing the cello, the only instrument for which his school could offer him tuition. At the age of 14 he was accepted by Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, where his piano studies blossomed. His teachers included Ryszard Bakst (at Chetham's), Joan Havill (at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama) and Alfred Brendel, whom Lewis acknowledges as a mentor.[2] His first international achievement was the second prize at the 1994 World Piano Compe

EXPERIENCE:
Highly acclaimed as one of the most experienced and unique ballet pianists in America today, pianist Paul James Lewis has been playing for dancers for the last 40 years.
Mr. Lewis began his training as a ballet pianist in 1976 with Denis Nahat, former dancer with American Ballet Theater, and then Artistic Director of Cleveland Ballet. Refining his craft in New York City from 1979-1988, he has since played all levels of Ballet Technique, Character, Women’s Pointe and Men’s Batterie, Variations and Pas de Deux. He also has experience playing R.A.D examinations.
Joining San Francisco Ballet in 1988 as a pianist for the school until 1998, Mr. Lewis developed and taught “Music Theory for Dancers” for the San Francisco Ballet School from 1992-1995. Following a 4 year position with Atlanta Ballet from 1998-2002, Mr. Lewis has resided in Chicago, IL, where he is currently the Senior Pianist & Music Administrator for The Joffrey Ballet.
