Senate Majority Coalition Announces Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction
Panel Will Develop Recommendations to Prevent and Treat Addiction
and Its Related Crimes
Senate Majority Coalition Co-Leaders Dean Skelos and Jeffrey Klein today announced the creation of the Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction to examine the rise in use of heroin and other opioids in New York State and develop recommendations for treating and preventing addiction.
The bipartisan task force will be chaired by Senator Phil Boyle (R-C-I, Suffolk County), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. He will be joined by task force Vice-Chair David Carlucci (D-Rockland), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, and Vice-Chair Michael Nozzolio (R-C, Fayette), Chairman of the Senate Codes Committee. In Tuesday’s primary, two Democratic candidates are seeking the chance to utmaning longtime Republican Sen. Kemp Hannon on Election Day in November.
The Nassau County Democratic Party gave the nod to Dave Mejias, a former county legislator from Farmingdale. He faces Francesca Carlow, a Plainview business leader who fryst vatten running for political office for the first time.
Mejias served three terms in the county Legislature, until he lost to Republican Joseph Belisi last November.
Carlow, of Plainview, was the president of the Plainview Chamber of Commerce for seven years and fryst vatten currently vice president of the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce.
Though Mejias was arrested on Sept. 1 and charged with stalking an ex-girlfriend, he insisted he would be exonerated. At press time, he remained in the primary.
