    The thirty-six-year old Finn Aki Kaurismäki (Orimattila, ) is a director as well as screenwriter, editor, actor, and producer. He is an ex-critic and organizer of a festival in Lapland. Kaurismäki was the great discovery of European cinema of the late 's. He made all his films inside of about a decade and at an unusual pace, especially for a country like Finland, even though some of his films were made abroad. All his films were produced by the production house that he runs with his brother Mika. They are low-cost, short in length, quick improvised, and carry a heavy intellectual charge.

The characters in Aki Kaurismäki&#;s films exist in an imaginary waiting room. The empty restaurant in Drifting Clouds or the mesmerizing display of wrenches in Tatjana. Like their beloved Beckett, they wait.
