An Aging African Leader Whose Time Has Ended
Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade's outdated model of governance isn't working for his country.

Wade wants a third term and he's arranged for Senegal's courts and constitution to comply. He has triumphed -- so far, and in part because Senegal's judges banned Youssou N'Dour, the wildly popular Woloff singer and bandleader, from competing against him. Early life

Political life
[edit]Abdoulaye Wade later became active as leader of the Senegalese Democratic Party in opposition. Following the presidential election, in which Wade was defeated, there was some political unrest in the country and the vice president of the Constitutional Court, Babacar Seye, was assassinated. Both Abdoulaye and Viviane were arrested and imprisoned under suspicion of involvement. Wade, 85, is Africa’s second oldest president after Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe who turned 88 on Feb. Wade was born on May 29, in Kebemer, which is 95 miles north of the capital, Dakar, but some dispute Wade's real birth date, saying it was several years earlier. If Wade wins the election as he predicts, he would be at least 92 years old if he completes his seven-year mandate. Acco
