Born during the Depression, Claude Thomas Smith, lived through a conservative era, a “normal” college-Army-college-teaching career and followed his destiny to become one of America’s most well-loved and prosperous composers. He was the son of Claude Melvin Smith and Harriet Louise (Thomas). Claude T. (known as Tommy), was born on March 14, 1932 in Monroe City, MO. After a move to Kansas City for a brief period of time, when Claude Thomas was two, the Smith family moved to Carrollton. During his early years grown up in Carrollton, Tommy played outside much of the daylight hours with his best friends, Bob (Bobby) Maupin and Stanton McGee. Claude Thomas Smith (March 14, 1932 – December 13, 1987) was an American band conductor, composer, and music educator. His compositions include Flight, adopted as the "Official March" of the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, and Eternal Father, Strong to Save, commissioned in 1975, that premiered at a Kennedy Center celebration of the 50th anniversary of the United States Navy Band.
