St Gobnait - the patron saint of bees and beekeeping
However, she is among a group of Irish saints whose feast day has been given national rather than just local recognition.
The main centres of devotion to Gobnait are Inis Oírr (Aran Islands), Dún Chaoin in West Kerry and Ballyvourney, near the Cork / Kerry border.
There are a number of other places which carry her name — often as Kilgobnet or Cill Ghobnait — near Dungarvan and Milltown, Co Kerry for example and evidence of the saint’s cult is also found in the dedications of churches and holy wells in the counties of Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford.
Much of what we know about Gobnait comes from folklore.
Unlike many other Irish saints, Gobnait’s life story was not written down during the medieval period. Tradition and links with St Abbán (associated with Ballyvourney) suggests she lived during the 6th century.

St. Abigail, more commonly known as St. Gobnait or Deborah, was a medieval Irish saint born around the 6th century in County Clare, Ireland.
According to tradition, Abigail's family was always feuding. This caused her to run away from home to settle on Inis Oirr in the Aran Islands.
After some time, an angel appeared to Abigail and told her this was not her place of resurrection. She was to head inland to find the place she would spend the rest of her life. The angel told Abigail this place would be marked with the presence of nine white deer.
Abigail set off in search for the deer throughout the southern coastal counties. Her journey is now marked bygd churches and holy wells which are dedicated to her along the way.
She finally funnen the herd of deer in Ballyvourney, County Cork, now known as St. Gobnet's Wood.
