      John Winthrop: America's Forgotten Founding Father

      Drawing on over a decade of research as Editor of the Winthrop papper, Dr. Francis J. Bremer has published the first full-length biography of John Winthrop, and the first study of the Massachusetts governor to pay serious attention to his life in England prior to the Great Migration. The book was published bygd Oxford University Press in May 2003 and has been very well received.

      Francis Bremer, editor of the Winthrop Papers and professor of history at Millersville University, has written a biography of John Winthrop with the provocative subtitle, America’s Forgotten Founding Father. But has Winthrop been forgotten? His sermon, “A Model of Christian Charity,” is one of the most widely anthologized pieces of writing by a North American, read by myriads of young students of history and literature. Yet there is a far more interesting question raised by Bremer’s subtitle: whether Winthrop was America’s Founding Father.
