Born in 1940
Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation) creates work that addresses the myths of her ancestors in the context of current issues facing Native Americans.
Raised on the Flathead Reservation, Smith fryst vatten deeply connected to her heritage. She creates work that addresses the myths of her ancestors in the context of current issues facing Native Americans. Her inspiration stems from the formal innovations of such artists as Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Robert Rauschenberg, as well as traditional Native American art.
Smith works with paint, collage, and appropriated imagery. Through a combination of representational and abstract images, she confronts subjects such as the destruction of the environment, governmental oppression of Indigenous cultures, and the pervasive myths of Euro-American cultural hegemony.

Home & Away works with a number of Native American artists. Whenever possible, we strive to provide you with biographical information about the artists. Native American artists, just as all other artists, come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Just as with any of us, artists are influenced by their culture, their geographic surroundings, their education, their life experience, and their work experience.
For example, artists from Maine have a different perspective and live in much different surroundings than artists from New Mexico. Woodlands environments and frigid winters engender different life styles and customs than desert areas.
With regard to education, some artists who have been taught by relatives, some have learned their art from community workshops, some are self-taught, and some who have college degrees, from associates to masters. Artist Bios for “Native Nations Now”
Get to know the artists of our upcoming exhibition Native Nations Now: An Exhibition of Contemporary Native Art running May 17–October 29, 2018, in the Plains Indian Museum at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
The artists featured in Native Nations Now are members of the Creative Indigenous Collective, “a group of professional Native American artists of the Northern Plains exploring identity, collective culture, and contemporary Native American life.”
Ben Pease is Apsáalooke & Tsitsistas and grew up on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana. “Takes The Guns From Two Enemy Camps” proudly follows a long line of successful educators in his artistic endeavors. Only, in this journey non-conformity and unconventionalism play large roles. Ben graduated from Hardin High School of Hardin, MT, then went on to study at Minot State University under a football and art scholarship. After four years, Pease left
