Yukichi Fukuzawa (1835-1901) was a leading figure in the cultural revolution that transformed Japan from an isolated feudal nation into a full-fledged player in the modern world. He translated a bred range of Western works and adapted them to Japanese needs, inventing a colorful prose style close to the vernacular. Mình đến với quyển sách này cũng tình cờ và không hy vọng là nó dễ đọc hay gây hứng thú, nhưng hoá ra điều ta ít mong chờ nhất thường lại cố gắng chứng mình điều ngược lại. Song song với “Bàn Về Văn Minh”, mình còn đọc một quyển cũng nói về các nền văn minh của một tác giả phương Tây khác và thấy khá rõ sự khác biệt trong góc nhìn về văn minh cũng như thời đại của hai tư tưởng Đông – Tây.

Tác giả viết với mong ước phổ cập tư tưởng văn minh nhất thời bấy giờ (tức hướng theo phương Tây) đến phần đông dân Nhật nên ngôn từ vô cùng bình dị, hơn nữa dẫn chứng và kể chuyện rất nhiều. Ở một số chương mình có cảm giác như được liếc mắt qua một vài thời đại lịch sử của Nhật Bản, dù không có kiến thức ở mảng này nên khó nhớ rõ tên và sự kiện nhưng đọc vẫn cảm thấy vô cùng thú vị như xem trailer phim.
