María Novaro
Director María Novaro is interviewed by Lourdes Portillo at María Novaro’s home in Mexico City on September 25, 2015. This is a co-production with the Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative and is part of the project From Latin America to Hollywood: Latino Film Culture in Los Angeles 1967-2017. Reminiscing about her earliest memories as a girl in Mexico City, Novaro shares stories about her family and growing up in a literary-minded household. She recalls her parents hosting salons for playwrights and novelists, which fostered her early interests in the arts, and relates how a brief move to Switzerland as a pre-teen broadened her horizons and helped her to view the world in a different set of cultural terms.

I may as well introduce the subject of Spanish songs in New Mexico by the statement of a somewhat startling truth; namely, that New Mexico is the greatest center of Spanish music in the United States. This is due not only to the fact that the major portion of its inhabitants are of Spanish descent, but even more to their natural inclination for musical expression. Whereas the Nordic-American leaves the production of music largely to specialists, confining his own productions chiefly to the privacy of the bathroom during his morning ablutions, the Spanish-American produces his own music, and he produces wherever and whenever he happens to see fit. He sees fit, furthermore, frequently, and in circumstances as various as leaving home for work in the beet-fields of Colorado and going to a neighborhood dance.
