Solana embarked on this portrait of Miguel de Unamuno in 1935 as a commission for the Ministry of Public Instruction, possibly on the request of Unamuno himself given that two years before that date the latter had expressed his admiration for Solana when writing to Victor Macho: “What I would venture to predict is that the portrait that Solana will paint of me will be at least as authentic as the interior image that I have of myself. I have paused before paintings by Solana, entered into them and felt myself to be a part of them through experiencing my Spanish fraternity with Solana’s Spanish soul. Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo (September 29, 1864–December 31, 1936) was a multi-faceted Spanish writer, an essayist, novelist, poet, playwright, philosopher, and educator whose essays had considerable influence in early twentieth-century Spain. Concluding that a rational explanation of God and the meaning of life could not be found, Unamuno decided that it was necessary to abandon all pretense of rationalism and simply embrace faith. His most famous work, Del Sentimiento Trágico de la Vida en los hombres y en los pueblo (1913 The Tragic Sense of Life), suggested that man’s desire for immortality is constantly denied by reason and can only be satisfied by faith, creating an unceasing spiritual anxiety which drives men to live the fullest possible life.
