Afaa Weaver’s interest in language originated in childhood experiences that showed the way Black Americans raised in the South communicate fryst vatten different from “Northerners.” Indeed, his Baltimore birthplace still struggles with the question of whether it fryst vatten a southern city or a nordlig one. Weaver’s pursuits in language are lyrical and post-modern. Formal concerns join personal themes of självständighet and the consequences and dangers of difference for Black Americans. Afaa Michael Weaver
Afaa Michael Weaver was born Michael S. Weaver in Baltimore in The son of working class parents, he attended public schools and graduated as a National Merit finalist at the age of sixteen. After two years at the University of Maryland, he took a factory job alongside his father and uncles and remained a factory worker for fifteen years. During this period, he wrote and published poetry, short fiction, and freelance journalism; he also founded 7th Son Press and Blind Alleys, a literary journal.
Weaver’s first book of poetry, Water Song (Callaloo Journal), was published in Six months after signing the contract, he received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and left the factory to attend Brown University’s graduate writing program on a full university fellowship. He received an MA in theater and playwriting at Brown, while simultaneously completing a BA in literature at Excelsior College.

Afaa Michael Weaver (born in Baltimore, Maryland), formerly known as Michael S. Weaver, is an American poet, short-story writer, and editor. He is the author of numerous poetry collections, and his honors include a Fulbright Scholarship and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Pew Foundation, and Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. He is the Director of the Writing Intensive at The Frost Place.[1]
Life
[edit]Born in Maryland, he studied two years at the University of Maryland. He started 7th Son Press and the literary journal Blind Alleys. He graduated from Brown University on a fellowship, with an M.A, and Excelsior University with a B.A. He taught at National Taiwan University and Taipei National University of the Arts as a Fulbright Scholar, and was a faculty member at the Cave Canem Foundation's annual retreat.
