I was inspired to do this because there's a thread on the Internet Movie Database wherein the users are debating whether Cal was a bad guy, or if he was actually a morally respectable man who Rose "should" have married.

    Here's my $0.02:

The movie does not depict Cal as an upstanding, righteous man who was forced to resort to "tough love," nor does the movie depict Cal as an evil, megalomaniacal monster. In my opinion, Cal is depicted as a pitiful product of antiquated upper-class values.

He makes questionable decisions and, at times, seems abusive, but he also appears to have some semblance of a genuine interest (perhaps even love) for Rose. But he is incapable of overcoming his upbringing, which has taught him the "proper" ways of living -- which are, generally speaking, quite boring.

Remember the scene at the dinner table, where Rose tells Jack that the men are about to get up and go drink some brandy while discu

    Character Analysis

    Cal Hockley. Smirking, art-history-illiterate Cal.

How do we hate Cal? Let us count the ways:

    • He's mean to basically everyone he thinks is beneath him (which is everyone).
    • He's a snob (see above).
    • Rather than loving or trying to connect to Rose as a human being, he only seems interested in her for the status/glamour she brings him by being his fiancée. He thinks of them as more than just a power couple, telling her they're "royalty." Ew.
    • He's violent when he's crossed. Cases in point: he does a Real Housewives of Titanic when he confronts Rose about her friendship with Jack, and later he pulls a gun on them when he realizes Rose would rather sink on the ship with Jack than survive and go on to marry him.
    • He's 110% selfish and self-interested. For example, he eventually scams his way onto a lifeboat by grabbing a frightened, crying child and pretending he's her father (since they were only taking women and children a

Caledon Nathan Hockley, often shortened to Cal, (1880's-1929) was Rose's fiancé and the main antagonist of the film Titanic. He was supposed to have married 17 year old socialite Rose DeWitt Bukater in an arranged ceremony when they arrived in Philadelphia, yet her hatred for him due to his sociopathic, misogynistic ways and, later, her unexpected romance with Jack Dawsonkept them from forming an intimate bond.

When boarding the Titanic, Cal was able to pay for the whole trip as first class passengers due to his high wealth and social position. He was however, physically, emotionally, and psychologically abusive towards Rose. This was allowed to happen due to the fact that women were considered a man's material and sexual property rather than independent human beings bygd society during this time, especially in the upper classes. They often had little freedom over their lives or whom they wished to marry, and men had complete dominance over them financially, spiritually and p
